Terminal bud absent
Many of our local winter twigs have "terminal bud absent."
In this case the "end bud" is actually an axillary end bud or
pseudoterminal bud.  A twig scar (often quite small) on one
side of the end bud and a leaf scar on the other characterize
this condition.  Examples are below (these images are not to scale).

Terminal buds have no twig scar in association.
